Welcome to the Town of Russell!

Nestled against the sparkling shores of Lake Superior at the northernmost tip of Wisconsin, the Town of Russell in Bayfield County stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Northwoods and the unique heritage of the Bayfield Peninsula. Embodying a blend of natural wonder, vibrant culture, and rural tranquility, Russell is more than a place on the map - it is a community woven from diverse landscapes and stories.

The Town of Russell occupies a scenic corner of Bayfield County, bordering the majestic Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and encompassing the hamlets of Red Cliff and Little Sand Bay. Its territory sweeps from the rocky bluffs overlooking Lake Superior into forests of birch, maple, and pine, dotted with creeks and home to abundant wildlife. The proximity to the lake not only defines the town's geography but also shapes its economy and recreation

Within Russell's borders lies Red Cliff, the homeland of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe). This sovereign Native American community is a vibrant part of the town's present and past, with roots tracing back centuries before European settlement.

Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes, is central to life in Russell. The waters provide exceptional opportunities for boating, fishing, kayaking, and exploring the nearby Apostle Islands, (twenty-two forested islands) renowned for their sea caves, lighthouses, and sandy beaches. The landscape is also threaded with hiking trails and scenic drives, offering residents and visitors alike a gateway into the wild beauty of Wisconsin's North.
